Recently Equitas had the privilege of introducing one of our major global partners, Restavek Freedom Foundation (RFF) with one of our new local partners, Helen Ross McNabb Center (HRMC). The result has been a collaborative effort in which HRMC is partnering with RFF to provide clinical training for the RFF child advocates working with restavek children in Haiti. 

U.S. State Department Releases 2011 Trafficking in Persons Report

This week the U.S. State Department released its annual Trafficking in Persons Report highlighting efforts and progress in fighting human trafficking around the world.  The report scores 184 countries, including the United States with a "Tier Ranking" of 1-3 based on the governments efforts to combat trafficking in persons. Each country's efforts are summarized in the "Country Narratives" section of the report.

A few months ago, I experienced a series of events that caused me to pause and reflect on some of the systems of injustice in our world.  It all started early in the morning when I turned the ignition to our '98 Corolla and it failed to start.  The short version is that after half of a box of baking soda, 5 cups of water, $6.53 worth of hardware, and an hour and half of my time...

In the aftermath of Haiti’s devastating earthquake, I spent three and half weeks in both Haiti and the Dominican Republic involved in the relief efforts. This was, needless to say, a life-changing experience in which I encountered countless stories of both tragedy and resilience, and my own participation took an unexpected twist from a small role in the food distribution and medical relief of thousands to an effort to save one child.
